Isaiah 9:6-7

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

How appropriate that last night I was at a Christmas concert in a gospel church in Feuerbach, where they sang (among other things) excerpts from The Messiah including these verses.

It was very moving, although the choir was far too small. The Messiah doesn't work properly with fewer than 250 voices. I remembered hearing it in the old Massey Hall in Toronto when I was a child, with a choir of 400, feeling the floor move under my seat when they sang "Wonderful! Counsellor!"
